Now in its 4th big year, the Berlin36 short film festival is the only marathon where professional filmmakers challenge each other to write, shoot, and cut short films within 36 hours or less. And it’s likely Europe’s biggest and most intense film production weekend, with thousands of pro’s in local cities creating hundreds of films which will later screen in Berlin.

The competition started in 2003 in Berlin, Germany, as an underground movement where 25 teams of professional directors, actors and cameramen challenged each other on a common theme. The following year 55 teams took the challenge in Berlin and Frankfurt. In 2005 the competition exploded nationally in Germany and crossed the borders with nearly 2,000 filmmakers forming 100 teams in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Vienna, Austria.

Teams have no more than 36 hours to create and finish an entire five minute film, or die trying.

The next event will take place in Spring 2007 in different cities across Europe, including Paris, Milan and Istanbul and collide in Berlin.
